The larger insulating material thicknesses, the demands on the aesthetics of a flat roof structure and larger spans have led to the development of the fully insulated, prefabricated Multibox element as a flat roof. Due to the arrangement of the load-bearing wooden elements between the vapor barrier and the roof skin without a rear ventilation level, the construction is not unproblematic from a building physics point of view. In addition, the number of cases of damage to such constructions has increased in recent years. In this work, the essential weak points of the Multibox roofs are worked out and tips are given for avoiding damage. For this purpose, the moisture behavior of realized flat roof structures from the Vorarlberg region (Austria) was examined with the usual calculation according to Glaser and a dynamic calculation with the WUFI program. The essential influencing factors on the hygrothermal behavior of Multibox roofs are emphasized and specific reference points for planning are given. In a further step, suggestions for improving the moisture situation in non-ventilated flat roofs in timber construction are worked out and options are shown for reducing the moisture load on the wooden components.

Author

Julia Bachinger studied architecture at the Technical University of Vienna (AT) and completed her studies with a diploma thesis at the "Department of building physics and building ecology". She was then in the office of DI Dr. Lothar Künz ZT GmbH in Vorarlberg (AT) works as a building physicist and site manager. In May 2010 she successfully completed her doctoral studies, which she completed part-time, at the Vienna University of Technology with the present dissertation on the moisture behavior of flat roofs in timber construction and now works as a building physicist in Lausanne (CH).
