Since the middle of the 12th century, marriage between Christians and Gentiles was customarily forbidden in the Catholic Church due to Impedimentum disparitas cultus (the difference in religion). Nevertheless, marriage was possible if the partner had previously converted. If this requirement was not fulfilled, the marriage was declared invalid even after the marriage had already taken place. In medieval society, the issue of marriage law was a very controversial subject. The problem is illustrated using the works of Wolfram von Eschenbach, Parzival and Willehalm. With the help of text-oriented analysis and interdiscourse analysis, the marriage relationships in Eschenbach's works are examined in detail. The analysis of marital relationships has shown that Eschenbach undoubtedly presented the church's teaching on marital issues in literary form. He does not limit himself to the literary representation of the canon law conditions of marriage between Christians and non-Christians, but draws attention to their problematic implementation. Eschenbach's critique is not aimed at the Christian religion with regard to Christian-pagan marriage, but rather tries to raise awareness of the difficulties that uncompromisingly conditional marriages cause.
