The present study attempts to contribute to research into the effective factors of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR is a well-studied and effective method for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the effective factors of which have not yet been clearly clarified. With this book, eye movements are derived directly from the EOG (electrooculogram) during an EMDR-typical setting for the first time. In addition, cortical processes such as activation, interhemispheric activation differences, and remembering and reappraisal are examined. Based on the assumption that the saccades elicited by rapid eye movements are a central factor in EMDR, the effect of three different target velocities on the saccades elicited by the right and left hemispheres is examined.

The focus of the study are the questions,

  • how saccades increase the occurrence of new memories;
  • to what extent higher stimulation speeds and thus saccades lead to more new evaluations and thus to an aha effect;
  • to what extent saccades lead to increased cortical activation;
  • to what extent saccades contribute to a reduction in the different hemisphere activation typical of PTSD.
