A water pipe that purifies its contents as it flows? A coating that breaks down air pollutants as they flow by? A surface that disinfects itself and keeps itself clean? What sounds like science fiction becomes possible with the photocatalyst titanium dioxide. Under UV light, titanium dioxide is able to purify air and water, kill bacteria on its surface and break down fats. Although these properties have been known since the 1970s, the breakthrough of photocatalytically active titanium dioxide is still a long way off. One reason for this is the difficulty of transferring the high activity of powdered titanium dioxide to coatings that can be used in everyday life. With cold gas spraying, a relatively young coating technology, it has now been possible to achieve a completely new quality of photocatalytically active surfaces. In particular, this book describes the theoretical basics of the coating technology of cold gas spraying in relation to titanium dioxide, gives a brief overview of the effectiveness of the photocatalytically active coatings against selected pollutants and bacteria, as well as the durability of the coatings against mechanical and weather-related influences.

Jan-Oliver Kliemann was born in Hildesheim in 1979. After studying physics at the Technical University of Braunschweig and a Master of Science in "Geophysics and Space Physics" at the University of California, Los Angeles, he worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. He then did his doctorate at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg with this thesis. He has received several awards for the results of his work, including the "Best Poster Award for Scientific Content" at the International Conference on Semiconductor Photochemistry in Glasgow, the Junior Session Award at the International Thermal Spray Conference in Singapore and the Hamburg Innotech Prize 2010.
