In recent decades, the frequency of flood events has increased significantly due to human intervention in the natural course of rivers. However, the population's awareness of the increased risk of flooding is low. In order to counteract this development, the observation of sustainable flood protection measures and their propagation in the public and in the educational sector are essential. The present work starts at this point and includes a series of lessons with ESD claim for the subjects of social studies, geography and politics of middle schools at Cologne comprehensive schools. The topics of flooding, flood protection and land use are dealt with in an integrated manner in order to convey a sustainable approach to flooding. The
series of lessons is based on moderate constructivism and the concept of design competence. The focus is therefore on independent and participatory learning processes. This is reflected in the problem-oriented topic, the action-oriented methods (e.g. business game) and the student-oriented teaching materials. With a view to the implementation in everyday school life, this didactic approach was rated as extremely profitable by practicing teachers in order to deal with the topic of “sustainable flood protection on the Rhine near Cologne” in class.
