In view of the long tradition of research into human decision-making behavior, it is surprising that our understanding of the cognitive mechanisms underlying childhood decision-making behavior is still in its infancy. This book provides a comprehensive methodological and empirical overview of the current status of decision-making research with children. Based on this, the theoretical debate about the cognitive mechanisms of decision-making that is currently being conducted in decision-making research with adults is expanded by a developmental-psychological perspective: An understanding of the decision-making process dominated by cognitive limitations (Adaptive Decision Making Framework) results in the assumption of a strong potential for development the use of decision strategies. This contrasts with the assumption that children are already capable of making good, informed decisions based on the weighted integration of multiple pieces of information by resorting to automatic processes (Dual Process Framework). These two alternative perspectives are empirically tested in 8 experiments by examining decision-making strategies in schoolchildren in comparison to adults. The findings make it clear that children make a content-based weighting of multiple pieces of information very early on when integrating information and thus make good and informed decisions within a very short time (examined from the age of 6). However, even 8 to 10-year-olds have great difficulty in systematically and consistently aligning their search for information with this understanding of the relative importance of information when making decisions. The questions "(How) do decision-making strategies develop?" are answered by a conceptual separation of the (deliberate) process of information search from the (automatic) process of information integration. The resulting implications for understanding the decision-making process and the child's decision-maker are discussed and a theoretical framework for decision-making research with children is presented.
