On the order of a few nanometers, silicon shows new properties. What is special about nanocrystalline silicon is the occurrence of quantum effects. In this diploma thesis it was examined whether certain nanostructures, such as a superlattice with silicon nanocrystals, are suitable for photovoltaics or whether quantum effects could be used for energy conversion. For this purpose, nine different solar cells with quartz glass (as a non-photoactive substrate) were produced in order to make the photovoltaic effect of nanostructures accessible for analysis. After a detailed theoretical treatment of the photovoltaic effect with the help of electrochemical potentials, the individual steps in the production of the solar cells are followed. Based on important optoelectric properties such as spectral sensitivity, it has been possible to estimate the absorption efficiency of the nanostructures for the visible region of the solar spectrum, which are orders of magnitude apart.

Author

Christian Stefano Schuster was born in 1983 in Tanzania. After a musical education in Freiburg as well as in Stuttgart and alternative civilian service in Sicily, he began studying physics in Tübingen in 2004. His thesis, which is now available here, was created as part of a double degree agreement with Trento. The author would like to continue his already very international curriculum vitae with a doctorate in Scotland.
