Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is considered the most dangerous parasitic zoonosis in Central Europe and is caused by the second larval stage of the small fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. In addition to humans, non-human primates can also contract AE, which is characterized by a gradually progressive course of the disease and is usually fatal if left untreated. Due to the increase in spontaneous cases of AE in macaques at the German Primate Center, the changes associated with AE were extensively pathomorphologically examined in the present work. Since the disease is clinically inapparent, especially in the early phase, various premortem diagnostic methods (serological examination using ELISA; imaging methods) were evaluated with regard to their prospective significance. In addition, preliminary investigations into prophylactic measures (immunization of rhesus monkeys with Em14-3-3; anthelmintic baiting of foxes) were carried out. The results of the work underline the necessity of a complementary premortem diagnosis based on different methods. The pathomorphological picture of AE in macaques is similar to that in humans, but fertile infections predominate in macaques. In order to solve the problem of AE in the long term, keeping away from foxes or using anthelmintic bait seems to be the most important measure in addition to prophylactic immunization of the monkeys.
