The energy conversion in combustion engines plays an important role both for the flow of goods and for individual transport. From the point of view of the scarcity of raw materials and the constant growth in population, a detailed understanding of the physical relationships is necessary in order to be able to carry out this conversion process with optimal efficiency and thus efficient use of resources. The aim of this work is to gain a deeper understanding of the internal engine processes and the interaction between selected aspects. For this purpose, laser-based measurements of system-defining variables are carried out in an optically accessible combustion engine. The present work contains detailed information on the tested test vehicle as well as selected results of the measurements carried out. The focus here is on the characterization of the engine, the time-resolved and three-dimensional measurement of the combustion chamber flow and a quantitative determination of the local, three-dimensional self-propagation of the flame in the combustion process of the Otto engine. All the results presented pursue the global goal of obtaining the most comprehensive possible picture of the conversion process from various sequential experiments under reproducible operating conditions. In addition, these serve as the basis for a database for evaluating engine simulations.
