Zoo and cinema - two places of entertainment that caught the viewer's eye at the end of the 19th century. However, both places cannot simply be placed in parallel without addressing the multifaceted and complex relationship between animals and film in the 19th century. In the present book, the various forms of perception of both settings, the zoo and the cinema, are to be worked out. Based on the scientific panorama of the Hamburg zoo director Carl Hagenbeck and the people's shows emerging at this time, it is explained how the zoo visitor slowly gets used to the way of looking at early cinema by walking through the individual zoo enclosures. Theories of early film (Tom Gunning, Thomas Elsaesser) are taken into account as well as studies of positivist physiology (Claude Bernard, George Comte de Buffon) and general theories of perception and psychology around 1900 (Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud).
